Berlin delivered. After months of focused training, I crossed the finish line in 3:52:47. Here’s how it went down.
The Build-Up
This training cycle was different. I worked with a coach (virtually) and focused on:
- Consistency over volume — never missed a key workout
- Threshold training — more tempo runs at marathon pace
- Recovery — actually taking easy days easy, better sleep
- Strength work — twice weekly gym sessions
Peak week hit 85km without feeling destroyed. That was when I knew sub-4 was possible.
The Course
Berlin is fast for a reason. It’s flat, well-organized, and the crowd support is incredible. The energy at Brandenburg Gate for the finish is unmatched.
Key splits:
- 10K: 54:12
- Half: 1:54:30
- 30K: 2:42:15
- Finish: 3:52:47
I negative split by almost 2 minutes. Starting conservatively made all the difference.
The Wall?
Around kilometer 35, my legs started to question my life choices. But unlike Mumbai, I had fuel left in the tank. The last 7K hurt, but it was manageable hurt.
The key was staying present — focusing on the next kilometer, not the finish line.
Reflection
Shaving 50 minutes off my marathon time in under a year feels surreal. The difference was structured training and respecting the distance.
Next goal: qualifying for Boston. Need 3:35 or faster. The work continues.
